Looking for a hydrating overnight mask? Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask has received rave reviews online. Let’s find out if this mask really quenches skin’s thirst as it promises. Psst. You may save yourself some money after reading this review.

I received a sample size Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask during Christmas. Although it comes in a 10ml disposable tub, it is enough to last me multiple applications because of how thick the mask is. In fact, I’ve used it close to 10 times and am only half-way through the tub.
About Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask
It is marketed as a hydrating and ultra rich overnight mask that “instantly quench skin’s thirst”. Here’s more of what Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask promises:
“Avocado and Apricot Kernel Oils deeply and instantly quench compromised moisture reserves and help build a reservoir for tomorrow. While Japanese Seaweed helps repair skin’s barrier to prevent future dehydration and signs of premature aging. Skin awakens comfortable, refreshed, supple.”
The original size comes in a 100ml tube and is priced at S$59. I’ve looked through Origins’ website and was surprised to see at least 10 different variations of their tube masks, ranging from charcoal to rose clay and mushroom.

This excludes their tub masks, sheet masks and powdered masks, all of which would probably add up to over 20 variations.
What’s certain is that Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask is the only tube mask that is meant to be placed overnight, and is suitable for dry or normal skin.
Now, let’s see if this overnight mask is worth buying. Read on for pros and cons of the mask.
What’s Good about Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask?
1. Lasts Forever
I’ve said how a 10ml sample size lasted me multiple applications. That’s because the “ultra-rich” mask comes in such thick creamy form it actually resembles soft butter. As with butter or margarine, every application only takes up a small quantity.

I reckon the full-size 100ml tube can probably last over a hundred applications. Good value indeed!
2. Won’t cause Insomnia
No doubt Origin’s Overnight Mask brought about some discomfort which I’ll share later, it didn’t lead to insomnia as in the case of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque.

What’s Bad?
1. Slight Discomfort
After applying the butter-like mask, I felt slight discomfort. The discomfort came in various forms – one being how the skin felt like it couldn’t really breath, like there’s an air-proof layer covering the face, making it feel ‘stuffy’.

Another discomfort was the slight stickiness even after tissue-ing it off. If you touch your skin, it would also feel oily even after hours – the mask doesn’t dry up at all. I didn’t mind that as long as it’s able to hydrate my skin like it promised to.

2. Tiny Pimples next morning
I’m very sure Origin’s Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask doesn’t go well with my pimple-prone skin. I observed fresh pimples the next morning after each of the three independent usage. Each of these “experiment” was separated at least a month apart, and I’d recorded the same thing, i.e. “pimples next morning” in my beauty diary.
But don’t worry, those pimples were tiny and not painful to the touch, unlike the ones I got after using C20 Original Pure Vitamin C20 Serum and THEFACESHOP Pomegranate Mask. You can click the links to see how painful pimples look like and be assured you won’t get any of these with Origin’s overnight mask. What you may get is a tiny dot with white center which you can easily squeeze out leaving very little redness or swelling.
3. Dry Patches on Skin
Now this came as a mystery. My earlier diary record was “Not hydrating. Dry patches on face.” I’d thought my dry patches on skin were existing ones due to usage of vitamin C serum or exfoliating peel.
Last night, I tried it again on a hydrated face. As I’ve just came back from overseas, I’d stopped all exfoliating products for at least two weeks, and my skin was in tip top condition in terms of its moisture level. Alas, this morning, I noticed dry patches over at least 30% of my face. It even extended to areas that never experienced dryness such as my chin and neck. This is indeed a mystery as this mask is supposed to be hydrating and “ultra-rich”.
I couldn’t attribute the dryness to any other products at this moment.
4. Inconvenient Sample Size
The foil-covered disposable tub meant that there’s no way to reseal it after first application. I’ve to put it in a little container, and placed it in a fridge to ensure freshness.

Even though this is a sample, there’s no excuse to be sloppy in its packaging especially when it is clear that the 10ml can be used for more than one application. Furthermore, it is retailed at Sephora for USD4. So strictly speaking, it is not entirely a sample.
How to Apply
Got this from Sephora’s website:
Suggested Usage:
-Twice a week or as desired, gently massage onto clean skin at bedtime.
-Tissue off excess.
Recommendation
If a hydrating mask gives me pimples and dry patches, it’s pretty certain I won’t repurchase it. Apparently, it has received above-average reviews on some review sites. This made me less certain that a hydrating mask from a good brand name can dry up skin.
Even if it wasn’t the cause of my dried skin patches, I can say for sure that it doesn’t provide enough hydration. Masks like L’Herboflore Hyaluronic Acid Biocellulose Mask and Hada Labo Gokujyun mask easily banished my dried patches.
Perhaps it just didn’t work for me? If you want to, you can try the sample size just to be sure. But, that recommendation is not from me. ;) Rating: 2/5
