I received a Suncut Prodefense Sunscreen Essence at a media event a while ago. Honestly, I didn’t expect to like it as its retail price was nearly double that of other Suncut sunscreens I’ve been using for years.
So what justifies Suncut Prodefense’s heftier price? And why would I consider repurchasing it? Let me share more.

About Suncut Prodefense Sunscreen Essence
Suncut Prodefense is a sub-brand by Kose and hailed from Japan. Unlike the other Suncut variants I’ve used, which are chemical sunscreen, this “Prodefense” in silver packaging stands out as a physical sunscreen.

I’ll elaborate more about what this means later in this review. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what the Suncut Prodefense Sunscreen Essence claims to offer.
Unclear Marketing. It took me a long while of usage and research to figure out that the silver Prodefense sunscreen is a physical sunscreen. I’m still not able to find out the difference between Prodefense in Gold and Metallic Blue packaging. Simplifying things for consumers can definitely help to boost sales!

Housed in a premium-looking silver tube, this Prodefense sunscreen claims to do more than protect your skin against the sun – it also helps care for blemishes and rough skin.
Do note that the Prodefense product we are reviewing today is an essence, which is typically more moisturising than say a gel. To know more about the difference, check out this post.
Without any further ado, let’s dive into the review segment, starting with its pros.
What’s good about Suncut Prodefense Sunscreen Essence?
1. Delivers what I already love about Suncut
I’ve previously reviewed another Suncut Essence sunscreen which I liked, and am pleased that this Suncut Prodefense comes with most of the great stuff such as:
- High UV Protection of SPF50 PA++++
- Moisturising as it contains 50% beauty serum (includes hyaluronic acid, Job’s tears extract etc).
- Generous quantity of 90g
- No pimples
2. Bonus: It’s designed for sensitive skin
One thing that stood out, and which may explain Suncut Prodefense’s higher price point is it’s suitability for sensitive skin. It promises to:
- Protect skin from environmental stressors such as pollen, dust and dirt.
- Be unscented, uncolored, paraben free, mineral oil free
- Even help prevent blemishes
After studying the ingredient list, I also noticed that this sunscreen contains zinc oxide, confirming it’s a physical sunscreen — a great option for those with easily irritated or reactive skin.
Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen: What’s the difference?
Physical sunscreen, forms a physical barrier on the skin, reflecting UV rays instead of absorbing them unlike chemical sunscreens. As such, it is often recommended for people with skin sensitivities, including acne and allergies. It is also said to be gentle enough for children too.
Some benefits of Physical Sunscreen include:
- Less likely to clog pores
- Starts working immediately when applied
- Less harmful to marine life and coral reefs
But, there are trade-offs too:
- The texture is thicker and harder to spread evenly
- May leave a white cast
- Typically less water-resistant compared to chemical sunscreen
That said, my experience using this physical sunscreen differed. For one, I didn’t notice visible white cast on my face. Secondly, the texture was not thick and quite easy to spread.

3. My Go-to Sunscreen after “harsh” aesthetic treatments
I often reach out for Suncut Prodefense after harsh aesthetic treatments such as microneedling. Its gentle, physical formula feels reassuring on my sensitive, healing skin.

4. Did you know it’s waterproof?
I only discovered while writing this review that Suncut Prodefense is not just sweat- and water-resistant — it also holds up well against friction and rubbing.
Happy to know that it’s “waterproof”, which means I can pack it for beach holidays.
5. Suppresses skin pigmentation
Two ingredients (Tranexamic acid and Vitamin E) help suppress melanin production to prevent spots, freckles and rough skin.
This is a bonus for those concerned with pigmentation.
What’s Bad about Suncut Prodefense Essence?
1. It’s pricier
As shared earlier, the price tends to be significantly higher than other Suncut series. That said, I’ve noticed heavy discounts lately, making me wonder if it’s headed for discontinuation.
Maybe they can do more in their marketing to help users understand more about the Prodefense series, and why they should pay more for it.
2. White Cast – Yes or No?
As shared, I don’t notice any white cast on me. Even if it does, it would be a subtle radiance which I totally wouldn’t mind. :)
But some reviews say otherwise – a few found the cast quite noticeable and didn’t like it.
3. Not an invisible film
While I do not mind its “moisturising” finish, others (e.g. my man) may prefer their sunscreen to be more lightweight and “barely-there”.
I know I used to too when I had oilier skin.
Recommendation: Is Suncut Prodefense Essence for you?
If you are looking for a “gentler” sunscreen that doesn’t clog pores, and don’t mind a “moisturising” finish (and probably higher price), then Suncut Prodefense could be worth considering.
I know I’ll always keep one handy during post-aesthetic treatments, when the skin is more sensitive and “injured”. Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
