Asahi Collagen Powder Review: How different is it from Meiji and DHC?

I’m into my last scoop of Asahi Collagen Powder, and thought I better do a quick review before it’s gone. If you have been put off by the fishiness of most collagen powder, read on as Asahi Perfect Asta Collagen Powder is one of the easiest to drink. It also mixes well with many beverages.

Tell me about Asahi Collagen Powder

Made in Japan, Asahi offers at least two types of collagen powder – the regular and premium one. For info, the one I’m reviewing today is the regular version, known as Asahi Perfect Asta Collagen Powder.

Asahi Collagen Powder
Left only half a scoop. Spoon is from Meiji.

I’d bought the 60-day refill pack from Shopee at around $40+, which is twice the portion of a standard pack of any brand. This pack comes with 447g of powder, and we are supposed to take one spoonful (7.4g) per day.

The packaging says that you can take twice a day for “intensive care”. But if you do so, this 60-day pack would last you only 30 days. :)

Here’s one distinct difference between Asahi and other collagen powders I’ve tried thus far. The source of collagen seems to be from pig and not fish. This may explain its cheaper price, as some research have shared about how fish collagen powder can be better absorbed by the body.

Fish vs Pig Collagen

I’d decided to give Asahi Collagen a try because I’d thought pig collagen offers a different type of collagen that could help my joints. But I think I got it wrong. That’s bovine collagen (cow), not pig. :)

Anyway, here’s a write-up on the different types of collagen and their benefits.

Ingredients of Asahi Perfect Asta Collagen

So, what does the regular version of Asahi Collagen Powder contain? Here it goes:

  1. Collagen Peptide: 5300mg
  2. Vitamin C: 100mg
  3. Hyaluronic Acid: 30mg
  4. Coenzyme: 5mg
  5. Elastin: 1mg
  6. Other stuff such a fibre, acidophilus and mixed herbs

Comparison: Asahi Collagen Powder vs Meiji vs DHC

Collagen Powder: Asahi vs Meiji

Although Asahi Perfect Asta Collagen comes with less preferred type of collagen (non-marine), it makes up for it by throwing in Hyaluronic Acid and Coenzyme which are not available in Meiji Collagen Powder (though you can find these in Meiji Premium). In addition, Asahi also comes with higher quantity of Vitamin C (100mg vs 50mg).

Both comes with same quantity of Glucosamine (60mg). However, Asahi doesn’t contain Amino Acid as compared with Meiji.

Collagen Powder: Asahi vs DHC

How about when we compare Asahi with DHC Collagen Powder?

Rather similar to our earlier comparison with Meiji, Asahi contains more miscellaneous add-ons and higher quantity of Vitamin C (100mg vs 50mg).

Which has the least calories?

In case you wonder which contains less calorie, DHC contains the least as compared to Asahi and Meiji (23 vs 25 vs 27 calories). But they are really not all that different.

Which is cheaper?

If we look at recommended retail price (RRP), Asahi is the cheapest on a per unit basis, followed by Meiji and DHC.

Review of Asahi Perfect Asta Collagen Powder

Asahi Collagen Powder markets itself as a product that can offer “youthful skin and stronger bones”. It is recommended for women who seeks firmer, more elastic and radiant skin. But, does it work as per its claims?

Now, the best thing I like about Asahi Perfect Asta is that it smells good. Yes, not fishy unlike Meiji and DHC. As such, you can mix it with more types of beverages than you could with Meiji or DHC.

I love mixing Asahi with soya milk and always look forward to drinking it every night. It also dissolves easily, even in lukewarm water.

However, if you ask me if I see any benefits, well, I couldn’t say that I do. This is especially so since I don’t have a clear BEFORE-AFTER period to do the comparison (unlike Meiji). As you see, I’ve been taking collagen powder for at least a year or two. So, my body has always been “benefiting” from some forms of collagen supplement.

But my gut feel seems to be telling me that Asahi probably doesn’t offer as much benefits. For instance, my nails have been quite brittle….breaking occasionally. I also do not see the radiance I used to witness with Meiji.

But who knows, maybe Asahi helped me in some other ways that are not easily noticeable? Unfortunately, benefits of supplements have always been difficult to assess.

Summary: Pros vs Cons of Asahi Collagen

What’s Good?

  1. Established brand since 1889 (but known more for its beer)
  2. Non-fishy; easy to drink or mix
  3. Cheaper than Meiji or DHC

What’s Bad?

  1. Not pure fish collagen
  2. No visible benefits

Recommendations: Should you try Asahi Collagen?

Asahi Collagen Powder may suit those who are looking for affordable collagen powder, that is produced by a reputable company (and country). However, I am more comfortable recommending Meiji Collagen Powder as of now.

To be honest, we really do not know if collagen supplement truly works. It’s like buying an insurance to make us feel better. LOL!

I’ll report again when I try other collagen powder. In fact, I’m starting on another new brand soon. Rating: 3.5/5
