Now that we are homebound and going slow on makeup and fashion pieces, there’s one product that I would use everyday – OFF! Insect Repellent Spray. Yup, we’ve officially entered the mosquito season (in Singapore). Dengue fever is on the rise too!

I’m so glad I bought a large bottle of OFF! Insect Repellent during my last visit to Malaysia before countries started locking themselves up one after another.
This insect repellent comes in extremely handy as I’m being bitten by mosquitoes almost every day. Staying at home all the time makes it worse as the mozzies have access to my warm and delicious blood day and night.
Having used the product for a while, I think it’s time to share what I love about OFF! Insect Repellent.
About OFF! Insect Repellent Liquid Spray
OFF! is a brand by SC Johnson, an American company that manufactures household products such as Ziploc, glade and Baygon.
Zooming into OFF!’s product line, we see a good assortment of insect repellent in various forms and formula. For instance, you can choose an insect repellent in liquid, lotion or aerosol form. Or opt for a scented/unscented, deet-free, dry-feel, sweat resistant or long-lasting formula.
Unfortunately, Singapore only carries a limited range. If I’m not wrong, we only have the FamilyCare range in liquid, lotion and aerosol. All contain deet, which is an active ingredient that repels mosquitoes.
The one I’ve tried and am reviewing is the liquid spray which I’ve purchased in both the 30ml and 100ml sizes. Let’s see what’s great about OFF! Insect Repellent Liquid Spray.
6 Things I Love about OFF! Insect Repellent Spray
1. Feels so comfortable on the skin
Normally, I’m averse to applying insect repellent on cleansed skin (when at home) because it makes me feel “dirty”.
Not with OFF! Insect Repellent Spray as the liquid feels and looks like water, and leaves behind a non-sticky and barely-there afterfeel.
2. Sprays evenly without drip
The spray works well and dispenses fine mist evenly on the skin, without any drip. Just like any spray pump, you’ll have to keep the bottle upright for it to work.
As such, some places such as the back of thigh and calf may need well-coordinated adjustment of the fingers for the spray to work.

3. Love the manly scent
OFF! Insect Repellent Spray carries a distinct scent, almost like that of a man’s perfume, which I absolutely LOVE! It’s definitely great that the repellent doesn’t smell like sweet fruits or insecticide.
For those who aren’t a fan of scented products, you may opt for the unscented version, which may only be available overseas (or via online orders).
4. It keeps the mozzies away
I love how OFF! Insect Repellent Spray works instantly to keep the mozzies away. As soon as I give the skin a good spritz, I would enjoy peace of mind and be protected from itchy bites, right away.
This is not a given as my previous insect repellent – KAPS Natural Insect Repellent – didn’t work in warding off mosquitoes.
5. Travel-friendly
OFF! Insect Repellent is available in a 1-oz (30ml) bottle which makes it travel- and pocket-friendly. On top of that, you can also find larger sizes online, which would likely provide better value for money.
To enjoy both portability and great value, you can buy both the small and big bottles. When the small one is used up, refill it using the large bottle so that it’s easier to carry around.

6. Low level of deet (7%)
The reason why the spray liquid feels so comfortable on the skin and doesn’t smell awful is because of the low concentration of deet – only 7%. However, the lower the amount of deet, the shorter its duration of effectiveness.
OFF! Insect Repellent Liquid Spray can repel mosquitoes for about 2 hours. I’m fine with the short duration as its portability means I can always respray when the effect is gone. If you prefer longer-lasting protection, check out the aerosol formula which can repel mozzies for up to 5 hours.

What’s not great about OFF! Insect Repellent Liquid Spray?
1. Contains Deet
Deet is not an ingredient loved by all as some deemed it to be unsafe. Based on reports I’ve read, deet is generally safe if used correctly and by adults. Here’s the direction for use:
Directions: Use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin. Avoid over exposure. Frequent reapplication and saturation are unnecessary. Do not keep product on any longer than necessary. After returning indoor, wash treated skin with soap and water.
TO APPLY TO FACE: Spray palm of hand and rub on. Do not apply to eyes and mouth and do not apply to the hands of young children.
FOR MAXIMUM PROTECTION: Spread evenly with hand to moisten all exposed Skin.
And here’s the warnings:
Warnings: Causes eye irritation, Avoid contact with eyes and lips. Use sparingly on small children. Do not allow use on small children without close adult supervision. Do not apply to excessively sunburned or damaged skin. May cause skin reaction in rare cases. Keep out of reach of children.
Based on the instructions and warnings, it seems like OFF! Insect Repellent Spray should be safe to use by most, except for young kids. Also, remember to wash it off before you go to bed.
2. Not Cheap (in Singapore)
In Singapore, a small 30ml bottle costs around S$4. This is a few times higher than the price I paid for the 100ml bottle (rm20), on a per unit basis.
A larger bottle (180ml) is selling at an even cheaper per unit price online. Therefore, you may want to source for the product outside of Singapore if logistically possible.
Recommendation: Who would love OFF! Insect Repellent Spray?
I think most would appreciate OFF! Insect Repellent Spray for its barely-there afterfeel and instant effectiveness against mosquito bites. It doesn’t smell bad, is portable and sprays easily and evenly.
I highly recommend this to those who need short-duration of protection or who do not mind reapplying after 2 hours in exchange for a low-concentrated deet formula. However, if you are going to apply it on children, you would have to supervise their usage or opt for deet-free insect repellent. Rating: 4.5/5
